Stephen A. Monti

Today, The University of Texas at Austin community remembers Stephen A. Monti, chemistry emeritus professor and longtime administrative leader, who recently passed away.

Monti served for many years as the executive vice provost of The University of Texas at Austin, administering many of the functions critical to the operation and success of the world-class research institution. He was involved in developing the institutional budget, managing facility renovations and assigning space, administering facilities and capital projects, and overseeing the setting and review of tuition policy. Monti also advised academic leadership in the areas of academic program administration, institutional policy and procedures, and resource management.

Monti joined UT’s Department of Chemistry as an assistant professor in 1967 and rose through the ranks. He held positions in academic administration from 1974 until his retirement in 2010. His administrative positions included assistant to the president, vice provost and interim provost.

“It is hard to put into words the importance of Steve Monti’s leadership at The University of Texas at Austin over the course of his distinguished career spanning eight university presidents,” then-executive vice president and provost Steven Leslie told the Austin American-Statesman at the time of Monti’s retirement. “His persistent focus on maximizing use of campus resources, such as space and institutional budget… had a very large impact on our march toward excellence.”

Monti was the second-ever recipient of UT’s Jean Holloway Award for Excellence in Teaching, receiving it in 1972. Monti was also awarded the University’s prestigious Presidential Citation in 2008.
