The Department of Chemistry is committed to providing a learning environment that is welcoming, inspiring, equitable, and fair to all students. To protect the integrity and fairness of quizzes and examinations, whether administered in person or online, students may not wear, access, use, or interact with unauthorized smart devices, artificial intelligence (AI) tools, or other hand-written or external sources of information or assistance unless their use has been explicitly authorized by the instructor.
During in-person quizzes and examinations, students may not wear, carry, access, use, or interact with smart devices of any kind unless explicitly authorized by the instructor. This applies regardless of whether the device is actively being used or whether any use is observed: simply wearing a smart device during a quiz or exam constitutes a violation of this policy, even if the student does not interact with it and is not seen doing so. Smart devices include, but are not limited to, smartphones, smartwatches, smart glasses, tablets, earbuds or other connected audio devices, and any other electronic device capable of storing, transmitting, receiving, or accessing information. This includes calculators, unless explicitly allowed by the instructor.
During online quizzes and examinations, students may not access, consult, or use artificial intelligence tools or services unless explicitly authorized by the instructor. Prohibited AI tools include, but are not limited to, generative AI systems, AI-enabled search or answer services, AI assistants or chatbots, and AI features incorporated into web browsers, search engines, operating systems, applications, or other software. Students may not enter, upload, copy, photograph, transmit, or otherwise provide examination questions or related examination materials to an AI system during an assessment. Students also may not use a separate computer, phone, tablet, smart device, software application, website, or other resource including hand-written documents to obtain unauthorized assistance during an online examination. AI browser extensions or plugins, whether visible or running in the background, are prohibited.
Unauthorized wearing, access to, or use of, a smart device, artificial intelligence tool, hand-written or external information source, or other unauthorized assistance during a quiz or examination will be considered a violation of the Student Honor Code and will be referred to Student Conduct and Academic Integrity in the Office of the Dean of Students in accordance with University policy.
